Martin Bond regrettably will not be able to give his talk at this year’s Cambridge Photography Show but this will be rescheduled.
It occurred to me that there was little recording of the lives of ordinary people in Cambridge, perhaps because there has always been so much else to be admired and photographed in this beautiful city. I thought it might make a good project to take pictures of ordinary people and share them on Facebook — not just occasionally but every day, to provide at least some record of their lives and the passing of time. I called the project ‘A Cambridge Diary’ and I pledged ‘A Picture Every Day’ for a year.
The anniversary of “A Cambridge Diary” came and went but I continued taking these photographs because I had discovered the value in paying attention to others – it made me happy. I soon discovered however, that it was impossible to ignore the allure and enticement of this stunning city and so my daily diary also included images of Cambridge’s historic buildings and pageantry but photographed in a way that I hoped went beyond the established rhetoric for the city. My talk is about how a 365-day project took 13 years to complete!
About Martin:
Martin Bond is a professional photographer who has lived in Cambridge all his life. A Cambridge Diary, which from March 2010 saw him publish a photograph from Cambridge every day, is his labour of love. After thirteen years of continuous pictures and five thousand photographs in the archive, he continues to regularly post new images that both celebrate and challenge the city’s timeless beauty with candid realities of everyday life.
His photographs have appeared on the front pages of numerous magazines, national newspapers and even on the BBC’s ‘Have I Got News For You’.
A selection of his images showcasing the city’s extraordinary and mundane moments has been curated into a collection of fine art prints, calendars and greeting cards exclusively available at Cambridge Contemporary Art. His series of books is available at www.cambridgebooks.co.uk.
