A discussion on Horror Photography, why do we need it, what is it and how do we create it? How can we take something terrifying and use it to heal and why do we feel compelled to tell horror stories and breathe life into them? What are the drawbacks of creating distressing images? I have created a series of images from my recurring nightmares in a bid to expel them from my sleep. Has it worked and what’s next?
About:
Born into a theatre obsessed family I was bitten by the bug and spent nearly 20 years living in that world, but after becoming ill I was left with disabilities that prevented me from living life as I had. I felt there was no role or place there for me and I withdrew. Then I found photography. Since then I have realised that there is still a place for me, not only capturing others creating performance art, but utilising the skills I learned as a child from my incredibly theatrical grandmother (Frances Brownlie) to create my own art.
To tell my stories and my nightmares. I belong to a local collaborative photography23.org who who work on collaborative projects for exhibition in the Cambridge area and volunteer with the ADC to cover Cambridge Freshers productions, which I love. I hope moving forward to create art through photography that can address individual and societal trauma, to start discussions, find hope and break down help seeking barriers.
