OM SYSTEM OM-3 Review

The OM-3 represents a significant step forward in the mirrorless camera market, combining retro-inspired design with cutting-edge technology. As a camera designed for urban creatives, it strikes an impressive balance between portability and professional capabilities.

Design & Build Quality

At first glance, the OM-3’s vintage-inspired aesthetic catches the eye. The metal construction feels robust and premium in hand, while weighing just 413g. The IP53 weather sealing adds confidence for outdoor shooting, whether you’re caught in a drizzle or exploring dusty urban environments.

The control layout is thoughtfully designed with a creative dial, computational photography button, and dedicated S&Q video controls. The 3.0-inch vari-angle touchscreen provides flexible shooting angles, while the 2.36M-dot OLED viewfinder offers a clear, responsive view.

Image Quality & Performance

At the heart of the OM-3 lies a 20.4MP Stacked BSI Live MOS sensor paired with the TruePic X processor. This combination delivers:

  • Excellent detail retention
  • Strong dynamic range
  • Impressive low-light performance
  • Fast processing speeds

The 7.5-stop image stabilization system is a standout feature, enabling sharp handheld shots at dramatically slower shutter speeds than typically possible. This proves invaluable for low-light urban photography and creative long exposures.

Autofocus System

The 1,053-point cross-type phase-detection AF system performs admirably. The AI subject detection shows particular strength in:

  • Human subjects (full body and faces)
  • Vehicles (including motorcycles)
  • Birds and animals
  • Moving subjects like trains

Real-world testing shows quick, decisive focusing in various lighting conditions, making it reliable for street photography and event coverage.

Creative Features

The OM-3 shines in its creative capabilities:

  • 4 color and 4 monochrome profiles
  • 12-color adjustable saturation control
  • Built-in art filters
  • Computational photography features
  • Live ND functionality

These features encourage experimentation while remaining accessible through dedicated controls rather than buried in menus.

Video Capabilities

For hybrid shooters, the OM-3 offers:

  • 4K 60p video recording
  • 10-bit H.265 compression
  • OM Log400 profile
  • Excellent stabilization for handheld work
  • S&Q (Slow & Quick) motion options

The combination of stabilization and log profile makes this a capable B-camera for professional work or a primary camera for content creators.

Battery Life & Connectivity

The BLX-1 battery provides around 500 shots per charge, while USB-C charging adds convenience for longer shoots. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity enable smooth file transfer and remote control through the OM Image Share app.

Pros:

  • Excellent build quality and weather sealing
  • Outstanding image stabilization
  • Comprehensive creative features
  • Compact and lightweight design
  • Strong autofocus performance
  • Versatile video capabilities

Cons:

  • Single card slot
  • Battery life could be better for professional use
  • Menu system takes time to master

Value for Money

Given its feature set, build quality and performance, the OM-3 represents excellent value in its price category. It’s particularly appealing for urban photographers, content creators, and enthusiasts looking for a capable all-around camera system.

An interesting review of the OM – 3, thank you.

One point to correct: battery life is more than adequate for professional use, it is very rare to get through more than one battery in a day. Even if one did, batteries are small and affordable, it is hardly an issue to carry a spare in a pocket. It would be impossible to get through more than two batteries in a day, however hard you work the camera.
